Two Common Sense Tips for Back Support

There are many different types of work that can strain the back muscles. Any job that involves repeated lifting, heavy lifting, lots of walking or straining of any kind and of course, anything requiring a lot of raising the arms over the head can be potentially harmful to the back. It can be surprisingly easy to injure the back and due to the nature of the muscles, oftentimes injuries are not realised for a day or two after they happen. It is for this reason that it’s a good idea to wear a brace for back support if you happen to have a job that fits any of these descriptions.

While it’s possible to remain fairly mobile with a sprained ankle or tennis elbow, a serious injury to the back muscles can be completely debilitating and most would agree that avoiding that whenever possible is ideal. Two important tips for avoiding back strain or muscle injury are as follows:

  • Wear appropriate back support: If you’re doing a job that requires a lot of lifting or hefting, a back brace is a wise investment. It might cost a little money upfront but the cost of being out of work with a severe back injury will be much higher. Preventative action is always better than picking up the pieces after an injury.
  • Use proper lifting techniques: Never, ever lift with your back. Lift with your legs. If you need to pick something up off the ground and then turn to put it somewhere else, do not turn in the middle of the lift. Instead, lift with your legs and then turn with your feet before stepping forward.
